The Unpopular Opinions Tag

The Unpopular Opinions Tag was created by The Book Archer. I might have been tagged for this or I might have found it on my own… I can’t remember unfortunately. If you tagged me, let me know haha!

1. A popular book or series you didn’t like
Truthwitch. So much potential but it only skimmed the surface and I thought the characters were meh.
don't understand it

2. A book or series that everyone hates but you love
Between The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. It’s deliciously gothic and twisty, and I loved the writing style.

3. A love triangle where the MC ends up with the person you didn’t want them to end up with
I think I’m usually on the winning side of a love triangle because I’m having trouble coming up with something! I didn’t love the way Ruin & Rising ended. It seemed like they were going for some sort of Mockingjay ending but I didn’t buy it.

4. A popular book genre you rarely reach for
Gritty/realistic fiction. Too dark or upsetting for me usually.

5. A popular beloved character you didn’t like
Danaerys Targaryen from A Song of Ice and Fire– I find her tiring 85% of the time.
i said it
6. A popular author you can’t seem to get into
John Green. More like, I have no interest in even trying.

7. Popular trope you’re tired of seeing
Special snowflake girls who are “strong”, “different from other girls” (esp in fantasy), and “only have guy friends” (contemp). There are different kinds of strength and I want more variety. More Sansas mixed with the Aryas. More characters like Alanna who embody it all!

8. Popular series you have no interest in reading
The Mortal Instruments. Read book one and that was enough for me.

9. The saying goes, “The book is always better than the movie,” but what movie do you prefer more than the book?
Lord of the Rings. I love the movies SO MUCH and found the writing style of the books dull and too detailed.
karen shrug

Ready to disown me? Or do you agree with some of my choices? Sometimes being a black sheep is inevitable!

So many good answers!! I agree 100% on 3, 6, 8. I also love the Lord of the Rings movies more than the books. I’m glad to hear you really liked Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea! I have that one and the sequel but haven’t gotten around to reading them yet.

I liked TRUTHWITCH while I was reading but I tried to start WINDWITCH a few weeks ago…. and it didn’t go so well haha. I might reread TW before trying it again but I’m not sure. I don’t know how its possible that book one just fell out of my head completely??

I COMPLETELY agree with LotR. I find the books SO BORING but the movies were excellent! (I know there are plenty of LotR fans out there, and I apologize! But I really just don’t like the books.) And I love your gifs!

I read all but the last 100 pages and just couldn’t do it anymore. Which is pretty sad haha!! I love all the history and everything but man his writing style left something to be desired. Which is why the movies are so great!!! Aww thanks 🙂

I wasn’t a fan of how Ruin & Rising ended either! I adored Nikolai and would’ve picked him over Mal ANY DAY. Mal and Alina just didn’t have the chemistry.
I tried a John Green book and I just cannot. I do NOT like his writing.
I have no interest in reading The Mortal Instruments either!

I wasn’t the hugest fan of Truthwitch the first time. I reread it a year later and it worked better for me– and Windwitch was a maaajor improvement. Still, I can totally see why people are “ehhh” about it.

I reaallly need to read BtDaTdBS. I love that title and I’ve enjoyed the author’s other books. I’m gonna ignore all the haters and remember that you like it!

I AM THE ONLY ONE who didn’t mind the end of R&R. Mal wasn’t my favorite but there was no way she was riding off with my Nicolai, so I prepared from book one. Plus it was sweet and cute and THEY SAVE ORPHANS :p 😉

Yep I avoid these too. I used to read a lot of true crime in hs and now I’m just ??? at past-me.

I am not a huge Daenerys fan, you know this. I guess you could say I am conflicted. I think she’s primed for a v v interesting arc over the series. Is she a hero? A conqueror? A tyrant? Cases can be made for each — and I think landing in Westeros will show which side of Dany is dominant. Yes her narration can be repetitive and stagnate (DEAR GOD LEAVE MEEREEN FFS) but damnit SHE’S THE MOTHER OF DRAGONS. I will never forget how awesome it was when I read the “dracarys” scene with the Unsullied. BAD ASS.

John Green is pretentious navel-gazing WASPM nonsense.

[hi 5 on Mortal Instruments] I cut out after book two. How tf is that series so popular and NEVER ENDING? Die already.

Yup LOTR movies > books. It is known. But Hobbit book > Hobbit movies.

<3333 sorry I yelled at you in your post 😉 :p

Hmmm interesting. I just dont think I’d have the patience to reread it :/ I think you’ll like Devil! It’s very different, very sharp writing. I mean honestly the triangle question was a reach hahah. GTFO OF MEEREN, jesus chriiiiist. You bring up such an interesting point- i think she sees herself as this conquering hero but she knows nothing about Westerosi politics so it will be interesting (IF WE EVER GET TO READ IT I’M SO BITTER). I haven’t read The Hobbit! You’ve piqued my interest.
