I love storytelling in any medium- movies, books, tv. And there’s honestly nothing more magical than seeing a book you love on screen, when done right. So I was very excited about this week’s Top Ten Tuesday freebie and decided to focus on adaptations!

Favorite Adaptations:

Lord of the Rings– the gold standard of book-to-movie adaptations. I actually vastly prefer the movies to the books!
Pride & Prejudice (2005)– my absolute favorite Austen adaptation; I like that it’s 2 hours long, I love the cinematography, and the music is perfection. I also love the casting; this is a movie I could watch over and over.
Emma (1996)– I think Gwyneth Paltrow is an amazing Emma and I adore Jeremy Northam as Mr. Knightley. As much as I love the BBC version I always come back to this.
HP and the Chamber of Secrets– my favorite of the Potter movies; Gilderoy Lockhart and Lucius Malfoy are perfectly cast and the Tom Riddle reveal is great. The casting and look of the entire series is perfect, but the later movies tend to irritate me with their page-to-screen liberties.

Stardust– I haven’t read this book but this is the most magical fairy tale of a movie.
To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before– so charming and adorable; I can’t wait for the sequels!
Love Simon–  I was curious how the emails would translate onscreen and the movie did such a great job!
Game of Thrones– the first 4 seasons in particular are excellently adapted (things start to go off the rails once Dorne is introduced). Fans waited years to see certain scenes and were not disappointed. Game of Thrones might be the most well casted show on television.

Outlander– the theme song! The gorgeous (actual) Scottish setting! The cast!!! The tv show has exceeded my wildest expectations as an Outlander book fan.
Crazy Rich Asians– I haven’t read the book yet but I loved the movie SO much- it was so lush and colorful and dazzling onscreen.
Twilight– back in the day when I was obsessed with the Twilight books(2008 to be exact), this movie was the best adaptation ever. I watched the trailer so many times and went to the Comic Con panel that summer haha. The movie captured the ambiance of the books so well and Rob Pattinson was an excellent Edward Cullen.
Pillars of the Earth– it’s been years since I’ve seen the miniseries but I remember it being a really satisfying adaptation!

Book Adaptations Not Yet Produced

Children of Blood and Bone– this is going to look amazing on the big screen!!
Six of Crows– Netflix is the perfect place for the Grishaverse.
A Darker Shade of Magic– I’m dying to see what Antari magic and the four Londons would look like on screen.
The Raven Cycle– I am so nervous but so excited about this project; the casting and overall tone has to be spot on. If it is, it could be glorious.

Books That Should Be Adapted

Shadow on the Crown– the 11th century is overlooked on the big and small screen, and this would be perfect for fans of The Tudors, Vikings, and The White Queen!
The Forgotten Garden– I would do anything to see Kate Morton’s books on screen; they’re so lush, so intricately plotted, and would make perfect miniseries.
The Song of Achilles– I think this was under production at one point but I haven’t heard anything in a long time and I need to see this beautiful historical epic on screen.


The Song of the Lioness quartet– a fantasy classic that I am shocked hasn’t been adapted yet.
Ella Enchanted– I’d love to erase the first movie from existence and get a proper adaptation, somewhere between Ever After, A Cinderella Story, and Cinderella (2005).
The Hating Game– we’re living in a mini golden age of rom-coms and this book NEEDS to be adapted. With the right casting (younger versions of Zooey Deschanel and Henry Cavill anyone?), and the right chemistry, it would be perfection.
